STATEMENT
Coming from a background in calligraphy, my work is informed by the action of writing. I also find the malleability of luminous drawing materials as seductive as the pen. It is at the intersection of these two interests where my art finds fertile ground. I use text as a tool for both conveying message and creating abstraction. My images are an amalgam of both the natural world and the contrived. I am drawn to the structure horizontal lines offer a page and use them repeatedly as graphic elements. In my “Bound” series they constrict and define my images which can become oddly figurative. The colors and textures are often taken from the marine environment where I live. I work simultaneously with drawing, painting and calligraphy tools to build many transparent layers. My favorite mediums are graphite, charcoal, pastels, and liquid acrylics. I work from the inside out and let each layer inform the next. It is a slow, methodical process, a lesson in restraint, for every decision I make is visually present in the end.
